At the recent AMPERE 2025 Conference, Beatriz García-Baños (ITACA Institute, Universitat Politècnica de València) presented results from the TransZeroWaste project on the microwave-assisted transformation of iron-bearing oily wastes.

The study demonstrated how Microwave Dielectric Thermal Analysis (MW-DETA) can be used to monitor key transformation stages—such as de-watering, de-oiling, and reduction of iron oxides—in samples of complex wastes from the steel industry. These findings support the development of low-CO₂ recycling technologies for difficult-to-process residues including potential to replace landfill by reuse and, contribute to the project’s goal of achieving net-zero-waste pathways in the steel industry.

This work highlights the potential of microwave technologies to convert hazardous steelmaking by-products into valuable raw materials suitable for future DR and EAF steel production routes.

About AMPERE 2025 Conference

The AMPERE 2025 Conference is the 20th International Conference on Microwave and High-Frequency Applications, organized by AMPERE Europe and held in Bari, Italy, from September 15–19, 2025. The event focused on advancing microwave and radiofrequency energy applications across various fields, including chemistry, energy production, and medical applications, while also featuring an “Industry Day” dedicated to industrial applications of these technologies.
