On 27 August 2025, the TransZeroWaste (TZW) consortium was invited by the Innovation Centre for Industrial Transformation and Emissions (INCITE) to present the current state of our project. INCITE is currently preparing input for the upcoming revision of the BREF on Iron and Steelmaking, and is gathering innovative technology approaches that can contribute to Europe’s climate and circularity goals. Their report is due by the end of 2025.
Steel is one of the backbone industries of Europe, but it also faces one of the toughest transitions. As Europe moves towards climate-neutrality by 2050, new by-products are emerging with unknown compositions and quantities, recycling routes are partly cut off and have to be changed, and the industry needs innovative solutions to avoid landfill and recuperate valuable secondary raw materials.
This is exactly where TransZeroWaste comes in.
Together with our technology partners, we presented INCITE the main focus of:
- Upgrading of low-grade iron ore by combining with iron-rich byproducts
- Development of innovative techniques to produce high quality pre-material for current & future low CO2-production routes
- Separation of disturbing components from by-products to replace scrap
- Development of the technological basis and digital tools supporting the transition towards net-zero-waste in the European steel industry
Next Steps
Right now, some of our approaches are proven in the lab. The next big steps are field trials. These will show how the technologies perform under operational conditions in industrial environment and how much impact they can deliver in terms of CO₂ reduction, cost savings, and circularity gains.
Being invited by INCITE shows how relevant our work is for the wider European industry. We’re excited to continue this journey and look forward to sharing more milestones as we move from lab innovation to industrial reality.
